A museum of history and the future must necessarily recognize the cyclical nature of time when seen from a certain distance.
Rather than designing a building to only satisfy the immediate requirements of a brief, we chose to create a generous, flexible and layered structure built with a very long lasting material - stone and a material that can be replaced and re-used, timber. In this way, more than a museum, Turku will gain a new civic centre, a place of community participation and engagement with the city’s life. A place that celebrates Turku’s history and how that history propels the town forward.
Centuries from now this building will either have established itself as a part of the urban fabric or become a ruin in a park.
In either case it will never become obsolete.
